About Me:
I calledMartin a 19 year old Ugandan black male born on the 27th July 1988 from a humble family. I have never seen my mother. My father was a businessman who owned a retail shop from which we go support.
At the age of four, I was taken to stay with my step mother in the village next to my grandmothers. There, was already Jane my elder sister who my mother had also dropped. I started school. Dad could bring the support from his shop in town where he was staying. At this age, I started my primary school in a school which was five miles away from where our home is. My half brothers, sisters, Jane and I could walk to and from school every day. I finished my primary level in 200. But it was a tough period for me. My step mother never liked Jane and me, we were always discriminated against, but with God's mercy I finished my primary. I remember one time when I ran away from home at the age of six, but was brought back. I was fed up of the mistreatment from my step mother
In November 2000 after my primary, my dad brought me to stay with him in town. He was renting one room, which he had divided into tow rooms; one room for the shop and the other room was his bed. He taught me how to attend the shop. I helped him in the shop for the whole of my school holiday. For this was our only source of income.
In 2001, I started secondary school. In 2002, dad also brought two half brothers, a half sister, and Jane to stay with us. He rented another room for us to sleep in. As we were growing, also the expenditure kept on increasing and the size of the shop kept on decreasing. From 2003, dad was really facing a lot of problems; he had borrowed lots money to inject into his shop and to pay our school fees. In 2004, dad's shop completely got down. He decided we go back to village since he could no longer afford the rent and the town life. From then my father is jobless.
I had decided never to go back to say with my step mother, so when this came up, I told my father that I was to stay. When dad and the rest left for village, I lead a street life for four months, then at a friend's place. At that moment, I had no hopes of ever going back to school. I started writing letter to different organizations request for scholarships.
I looked for a job but failed. I could only do casual work at the building sites for food, this was 2005.
In January 2006, I got a call from the Straight Talk Foundation, they gave me a two year scholarship which enabled me to go back to school and finish my secondary school level. I sat for my final exams in November 2007. I was doing a combination of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Entrepreneurship. My main goal has always been studying to become a doctor.
After school in December, I managed to get a cleaning job at Ivory Hotel Nansana where I was also given a room to sleep in. I am no longer a street boy! However, the money I earn is too little to enable me go to university yet I really love to go a head and became a doctor.
I have a plan of starting a poultry farm so that I can create my own job and maybe save money for my education. If all goes well as I plan, I will also start a pig farm. However, starting a poultry farm requires some money which is still hard for me to save. But if given a hand, I hope to succeed
